Lazhghvazh
(Leader).
A ritual/religious song, praising gods whom the
Svans called their leaders. The song speaks of offerings
or sacrifices to the gods — golden decorations
and bulls with golden horns. The song is accompanied
by the traditional Svan string instruments: the
chuniri (a sort of viol, or bowed lute) and the changi
(harp). According to Svan legend, the first changi
was made by a Svan from the severed arm of his
son, using his hair as the strings. Musicologist Kurt
Sachs mentioned the obvious resemblance between
the Svan changi and the ancient Mesopotamian
(Sumerian) harp. The instruments are decorated
with traditional motifs. The full version of the song
also speaks of goats with long, twisted horns.
Voi dili vo, isgwami vo, glory to you.
Golden decoration.
You have sacrificed bulls.
Their horns were golden.
