Вахтанг Степанович Ониани родился 30 августа 1932 года в селе Джахундери в Сванетии – Грузинская Республика.
В 1951 году поступил в Государственную Академию Художеств на факультете скульптуры, которую закончил в 1958 году.
В студенческий период Ониани принимает участие в республиканских, всесоюзных и зарубежных выставках.
Он заслуженный художник Грузинской Республики, кавалер ордена «Достоинства», дизаинер международного выставочного искусства, член союза художников СССР, и грузинского союза художников, настоящий член Грузинской Национальной и Технической Академии. Автор многочисленных станковых скульптур и монументов.
Кроме этого, Ониани литературно и художественно обработал и издал сванский-грузинский мифологический эпос.
